During my third year of medical school, I bought my first condo – and decided to completely renovate the kitchen and bathroom.
I recognize I’m lucky to be in a position to buy a home during med school – something many students can’t consider. With help from my parents and savings from investing before med school, I’ve had the privilege to focus on medicine and take on side projects like renovation. I’m sharing these experiences in hopes they’re helpful, regardless of where you’re starting from.
Technically, there was nothing wrong with the kitchen, but I wanted something brighter and cleaner, along with new appliances. I used the same crew from my bathroom renovation for this project.
We painted the cabinets, swapped out the knobs, replaced the sink and faucet (a style I’ve always wanted), and installed new appliances. It made a huge difference in how the space felt.
This is going to be a short post, but if there’s one thing to take away, let it be this: don’t sleep on Facebook Marketplace.
Usually, when you get new appliances delivered, you have to pay someone to haul the old ones away. But if you sell them online – fridge, microwave, gas range, dishwasher – the buyer will come uninstall them, pick them up, and even pay you.
If you want to expedite the process, make sure to use Facebook’s boost/ad function. This has worked for me many times, including during this renovation. I sold everything within 1-2 days, and the entire kitchen update took just three.
